As BMW prepares to unveil an urban-focused electric car, they have also launched an iPhone app called "Evolve." Available for the iPhone and Android smartphones, this app will give conventional fuel car drivers a taste of how electric-vehicles work. Through the use of GPS tracking technology, this app tracks your daily driving distance and allows you to virtually "charge" your electric vehicle.
As more of an educational app that anything else, the Evolve app totals the drivers trip length and distance, then calculates how much time was spent driving, parked and charging. It also tells the driver how much less of a CO2 emission they would have added to the environment and how many gallons of gas they could have saved if they were driving an electric vehicle.
With the development of the "Evolve" app, BMW hopes to encourage drivers towards the technological improvements in their automobile lineup with the release of the 2013 BMW i3. After 40 years of development with the electric vehicle concept, BMW is set to introduce its first retail market electric vehicle.
The 2013 BMW i3 will be a 4-passenger, 4-door hatchback with a rear-mounted battery-electric power train that has been compared to the likes of the Mini Cooper. The battery pack is comprised of the 96 lithium-ion cells in eight 12-cell packs. The battery capacity will be around 35kWh with a driving range between 110 to 130 miles per full charge.
As Klaus Draeger, Research and Development Chief states that, "the drive system remains the heartbeat of a car, and that also applies to electric vehicles Electromobility and the hallmark BMW driving pleasure make an excellent match."
Headlining for the 2013 BMW i3 is the vehicle's structure. Equipped with the first volume produced car with a passenger cell made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic, the i3 will be the world's first in its class.
The biggest asset of the carbon fiber reinforced plastic is that it is 50 percent lighter than steel, can be made more rigid that steel and is virtually immune to the elements of daily driving. Specifically speaking, the lighter an electric vehicle is, the further it can go on a single charge with a given-size battery.
