Car Recalls for Hyundai and Honda: Combined More Than 335,800 Vehicles Recalled for Possible Defects
DETROIT, M.I. Car recalls are multiplying as Honda and Hyundai are both issuing two different recalls. The possible issues range from malfunctioning airbag systems to windshield wiper failure. All problems increase the risk of a crash for drivers or possible fires.
The following describes the possible issues and which models may be affected.
Hyundai
Hyundai is recalling 188,697 Hyundai Elantras, model years 2007-2009, due to possible unneeded deployment of airbags. The weight sensor, which deactivates when there is a passenger of a certain weight, may become contaminated by normal use of the vehicle or even spillage of liquids in the cup holder directly above the sensor. If the sensor becomes contaminated, the front passenger airbag may deploy no matter the weight of the passenger. Also, if the vehicle is in a crash, the airbag may deploy when it does not need to and may cause injury to the passenger. Dealerships will install a protective cover over the weight classification system connector to ensure that the sensor cannot be contaminated.
The second of Hyundai's car recalls includes the same vehicle, the Hyundai Elantra, model years 2007-2008. There are 95,783 vehicles that may be affected by another defect in the airbag system apart from the one already mentioned.
This defect may affect the sensor that runs the length of the driver's seat track. The seat track determines the pressure that is correct for the seating position; so if an airbag does deploy in case of an impact, the airbag will not deploy with more pressure than is needed. The problem lies with the airbag module, which may receive unstable electrical signals that could cause the airbag on the driver's side to deploy with much more pressure than intended. The higher pressure could cause injury to the driver if a crash did occur.
Owners may bring their vehicle to any dealer where they will reprogram the airbag control module at no charge.
Hyundai owners will be made aware of both of these car recalls in April 2011.
Honda
The Honda Civic 2011 is being recalled by Honda due to a possible fuel leakage issue. The rollover valve within the Honda Civic is built into the fuel pump so in the event of a roll over it will prevent fuel from leaking out of the fuel tank. The problem may be that the plastic case that holds the roll over valve was not correctly welded, which may cause the case to break or crack. If this occurs, the rollover valve may fail to work properly which could cause fuel to leak during a rollover incident and potentially cause a fire.
Dealers will inspect the fuel pump and the rollover valve. If needed, the module will be replaced at no charge.
Honda is also recalling 33,341 Honda Odyssey vehicles from 2011 due to possible windshield wiper blade construction. If a front wiper blade freezes to the windshield and then the motor is turned on, one of the extension arms of the wiper blades may bend or break off from the motor. This may occur because the rod is not strong enough. Dealers will replace the front windshield wiper rods for free.
Both of these car recalls will be announced to owners in mid-April.

Honda Brio is a Family Oriented hatchback
Honda has no other way to go but the Brio way. The car maker has given everything in one last ditch effort to regain its lost glory in the Indian car market. This will in fact be the first attempt from the company to launch something at the front end of the car market catering to the mass audience.
The Brio clearly shows the way for the future of the company and the car equally looks futurish with its looks. The car for an entry level segment has some detailing on the looks with flowing lines, broad muscular stance and is well rounded off with a sporty and sleek finish. It does take a while for you to come to terms with reality when you watch the Brio for the first time. The aggressive road stance, the short overhangs and the tightly stretched skin for a taut all give the car a dynamic look.
The completely glass material hatch at the back makes you realize why the car had to go so cheap. The tail lamps are also a no fit and it also lacks the rear wiper. The bigger problem lies with the absence of a demister, which comes in the way of visibility during travel. The Brio looks smaller than some of its rivals and this could also make the car feel inferior to its competitors. The car is however packaged in a brilliant gift wrap. It has concentrated on making the best use of its short 2345mm wheelbase.
The company has also got the main key ingredients in the form of high fuel efficiency. The main reason behind the mileage is the low kerb weight weighing around 925 kg. The car has an enviable mileage figure of 18.4 kmpl. The car is light in weight but more than makes up for it with the use of some rigid and high-strength steel and reinforcements at key areas. The engine and the power is the same one as the Jazz similar to the 88bhp 1.2-litre i-VTEC engine.
On the insides, the Brio might not match the Jazz and the Vista space to space. It does have a stand of its own with more than enough storage space. The car is wider compared to the Swift and the blowing winds really take you in their stride with equally comfortable seats. The leg space for the occupants at the rear is plenty and is also very accommodating on the whole. However seating more than two adults at the back can be the cause of some congestion. The dashboard has a warrior attitude to it with the two piece pattern and the offset centre console which a never before seen.
The drive wheel of the car is nothing like an entry level car and is more than up beat in terms of the quality. The instrument panel and the dials are also premium in appearance. The ac vents are adorned by chrome rings giving it a dash of style. The switch gear is easily operatable with a solid push button along with plenty of storage for all the frivolous items.

Honda Brio Is The Latest Little Wonder
Honda Brio is ready to rule the sales charts. At least that seems to be the notion behind Honda's new creation. It is the cheapest car from the company in India. It will be cheaper than the Honda Jazz. The small car is pitted against the likes of the Maruti Swift.
It looks a generation above than the present lot. The curves are a never seen before, the car has a stance to reckon with. Over all it is a sporty and compact car giving it an appealing nature.
Compared to the other compact cars it is smaller in size. This could possibly be a cause of concern which makes the car look below par its class. The most striking feature of the car is the entire packaging it comes in. It has a 1.2 litre motor, the dashboard is not very deep and most of the focus seems to have gone on the making the best space utilization.
As a compact car it has hit all the right nodes in the fuel, performance and stability department. The car is ultra low weight with just 925 kgs. The strength is bolstered with high quality steel and reinforcements at vulnerable areas. The suspension takes the entire load and is springy and lively even at the worst stretch of roads.
The engine is same as the Honda Jazz and delivers up to 88bhp. The interiors are not up to the likes of the Jazz or the Vista, but it does surprise you to an extent when compared to its compact exteriors. The back seats are comfortable as well. It has good arm and leg space for the occupants. In fact a person of even six feet height can easily sit at the back in this compact car.
It is a compact car but not a cheap car. It is not embedded with jewels of higher end cars but at the same time it is not stuffed with low cost materials to save costs. When compared to the low cost materials available in the Toyota Etios Liva the Honda Brio does not come with the same cheap feel to it.
The actual cost savings comes in the form of no adjustable driver's seat, lack of parcel tray at the back, no music player options, no rear demister, which does pinch you a bit. The boot is also on the smaller side but Honda has done enough for the maximum utilization of its luggage area.
The gear transmission as usual needs no introduction from Honda. The engine too is also smooth and nice for a decent run around but it wrangles at higher engine speeds.
Verdict: In short it is spacious for a compact car. Does not look cheap for a compact car, pretty comfortable with good looks, decent engine and a good fuel economy it has all the right nodes to become a successful compact car. The Honda Brio does look worth its price at Rs 4.3 lakh making it a value for money.

Honda showcases small car Brio
These are the first pictures of Honda's attractive new Brio, hot from the Bangkok Motor Show. Based on the 2CV design concept shown at the Auto Expo in Delhi, the Brio has a youthful and unique identity.
The big chrome strip in the grille and the Honda H' at the centre are familiar but, apart from that, this tightly skinned compact car has a look all its own. It looks ready for action, thanks to the upward sweeping lines and tipped-forward stance, and the wide, open chin looks a lot like an intake on a jet fighter Pretty radical stuff. Bulging headlamp pods get black surrounds, the Indian version may get chrome inserts and this car has side skirts too, something that may only come as an option here in India. As on Maruti's original 800, this is to save weight and cost but the smoked-out effect provided looks attractive.
While the 3.6-metre length and relatively compact dimensions mean this car is shorter than a Maruti Swift, Honda engineers have worked hard to extract maximum space from inside the cabin. Expect the Brio to offer clever space utilisation and practicality as seen on the Jazz.
Though Honda claims the Brio is still only a prototype, we believe it is very close to the production version. Especially the interiors which, like the Toyota Etios, do not conform to tradition. There is no conventional central console, with the music player in fact aligned horizontally with the instrument panel. Slightly retro dials, a generous smattering of circular vents and plenty of beige and chrome give the Honda a slightly upmarket feel on the inside and Honda has paid plenty of attention to storage space as well. There are plenty of cupholders and storage space at the bottom of the central console and in the door pockets is good too. The double DIN music system, like in the Honda City, has no CD player and only iPod support; there is a driver airbag as well. Sign of cost cutting, however, exist the front seats have got fixed head restraints and there is no climate control either.
Power will come from a 1.2-litre engine from the Jazz and a 1-litre unit might arrive at a later stage. This will be a three-cylinder version of the same motor but without the VTEC technology. To improve fuel efficiency, Honda has used Michelin Energy tyres and has added flaps at the lower end of the front bumper and rear tyres to further reduce the coefficient drag. There is no news of a diesel engine as yet, but Honda has hinted towards a hybrid version of the '2CV', following feasibility reports.
Honda knows that in order to achieve success in this segment, it will need to be cost competitive. Prices are expected to start at Rs 4.5 lakh, which will be good value. The Brio will arrive around September 2011, which means that it will be the last of the three hatchbacks launched next year, after the Toyota Etios hatchback and the new Maruti Swift. There's a big fight coming up, so stay tuned.
